Job Sharing?

Why don't people swap roles occasionally? Fr Lombardi could go riding around in airliners making remarks to journalists; then the Holy Father could do the News Conferences explaining what the remarks had really meant.

This year's Vatican Liturgical Schedule doesn't include the Holy Father presiding at the Mass of the Last Supper. Is Cardinal Burke, il Cardinale volante, still free to step into this breach? If, by then, the Swiss Guard has been abolished, he could bring his Knights of Malta to the Lateran to provide Security. Juventutem could waggle flabella over the sedia gestatoria.

I wonder if the Bishop of Rome will be the only able-bodied Latin Rite diocesan bishop in the world not to celebrate the Mass of the Last Supper openly with his priests, deacons, and people? There will of course be sound precedents galore from the much more flexible age of the Renaissance papacy ... it's praxis within the rather more rigid post-Vatican II dispensation that I'm curious about.

Dear Father. You have a piercing sense of humor. It is a blast to read.

That switch was funny. My first laugh of the day. Thanks.

But, as an interested and informed outsider, I cannot but think that you find all this deeply painful.

Restore the feast of fools! Let a boy bishop assume the throne of Peter at the "et exaltavit humiles" of the Magnificat at Vespers in the Lateran. I have a feeling that such magnanimous gestures of humility are just in the current holy father's wheelhouse.

I do hope that ancient ritual of the tasting of the unconsecrated host and wine for poison is revived. At the rate that Papa Argentino is alienating people, it would be only prudent. Poor Padre Lombardi will probably get the job, so he will have to put dubious things into his mouth as well as using it to enunciate the occasional technical inexactitude...

Father Hunwicke, thank you for making me laugh, in the face of the follies going on in the Church these days.

Communique from the Prefect of the Pontifical Household

The Holy Father Francis, on Thursday April 2, Holy Thursday, will visit the Casa Circondariale Nuovo Complesso Rebibbia (Rome's Rebibbia Prison), to meet with detainees.

At 5:30, in the Church "Padre nostro", he will celebrate the Mass of the Lord's Supper, during which he will wash the feet of some of the detainees (of Rebibbia) and some from the nearby Casa Circondariale Femminile (women's prison).
