Obligations

From Gueranger: "The ancient discipline of the Church obliged all the faithful, under pain of being considered as no longer Catholics, to receive Holy Communion on Christmas Day, as well as on Easter and Whit Sundays. We find a formal decree of this obligation given in the fifteenth canon of the Council of Agatha, (Agde,) held in 506."

I wonder how this relates to the old Anglican rule ...

  1. Just for information:
A rescript is out in Rome concerning the official interpretation of t.c.
I have only found the news on the vatican news site:
    https://www.vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/2023-02/pope-francis-traditionis-custodes-rescript-bishops.html
I have not been able to find an official version in italian or english, not to mention a latin version.
    O tempora o mores....

  3. Dear Father Hunwicke,
as far as I have been able to figure out what happened,
    the decision was published as
"Rescriptum ex audientia Sanctissimi" in L´Osservatore Romano, but I can´t get into the page with the document, for subscribers only.
Therefore I can´t say in which language it is, the title would suggest a latin version, but it is the italian version of the ossrevatore.

  4. The LMS has posted the Italian original (why Italian?) on its Facebook page. In the Comments Alastair Tocher has provided the following Working Translation:
    RESCRIPTUM EX AUDIENTIA SS.MI, 21.02.2023
The Holy Father, at the Audience granted on 20 February to the undersigned Cardinal Prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, confirmed the following regarding the implementation of His Motu Proprio Traditionis custodes of 16 July 2021.
These dispensations are reserved in a special way to the Apostolic See (cf. C.I.C. can. 87 §1):
    — the use of a parish church or the erection of a personal parish for the celebration of the Eucharist using the Missale Romanum of 1962 (cf. Traditionis custodes art. 3 §2);
    — the granting of permission to priests ordained after the publication of Motu proprio Traditionis custodes to celebrate with the Missale Romanum of 1962 (cf. Traditionis custodes art. 4).
As established by Art. 7 of Motu proprio Traditionis custodes, the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments exercises the authority of the Holy See in the above-mentioned cases, supervising the observance of the provisions.
Should a diocesan bishop have granted dispensations in the two cases mentioned above, he is obliged to inform the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which will assess the individual cases.
Furthermore, the Holy Father confirms - having already expressed his assent in the audience of 18 November 2021 - what was established in the Responsa ad dubia with the annexed Explanatory Notes of 4 December 2021.
The Holy Father has also ordered that the present Rescript be published in L'Osservatore Romano and, subsequently, in the official commentary of the Acta Apostolicae Sedis.
From the Vatican, 20 February 2023
    Arthur Card. Roche
    Prefect

  5. Why is the original in Italian, Matthew?

    Grilloids rule OK!

I wonder if His Corpulence Cardinal Roche is in charge of the regulations for the Lenten fast?
