No plagiarism

I would love to be able to describe to you how I walked up the Thames with Filia nata Tertia yesterday, preceded by an almost tame kingfisher, its turquoise and orange incandescent in the brilliant sunshine. And about how, when we got to the Trout, a peacock walked around our table as I had an al fresco Guinness.

But you would just think that I was trying to ape the great Father Zed.

Although, come to think of it, he doesn't write much about daughters.

Once you start asking people for money and gifts we'll know that you are truly plagiarising Fr Z!

Whenever I've been to the Trout the draught beer has been awful. visiting the Trout for the first time some years ago was one of the great disappointments of my life. I first read about it in a marvellous WW1 autobiography, centred around Oxford at the beginning and end, called "The bells of Hell go tingalingaling" by Eric Hiscock. A good read, as was the sequal "Last boat to Folly Bridge".

It always amuses me to read your mild quips at Fr Z...everyone else fawns over him like so many sycophants...

Rubricarie, Patricie:

Fr Z is one of your brothers. If he is at fault, he should first be reprimanded privately.

I understand that fawning on those who are perceived as second-rate will irritate those who perceive themselves as first-rate.

As a tenth-rate musician, I have learned to watch twentieth-rate (nay, fortieth-rate!) musicians becoming rich and famous, whilst far better musicians than I dwindle into obscurity or find themselves struggling for a living by the skill that God granted them.

At first it made me cross. But I have learned that none of it matters: you don't matter and nor do I. It is the music that matters, and we should be dedicating ourselves to that, however poor our advocacy may be. And we won't advocate it by sniping at our fellow musicians.

CPKS, the vocatives of Patricius and Rubricarius would be Patrici and Rubricari respectively...

Or even PatriciO gratias.

Thank you for the correction, Patrici: I should have known better than to try to revive my Latin skills in a forum where my maladresse would lacerate everyone's sensibilities!
