Num Spectat Clio?

Some politician has pronounced that "History is Watching".

What does this mean?

  1. "History" is a word for God used by people who are ashamed to be thought of as religious.

  2. Maybe someone should tell him that God is watching.

  3. It means that the politician is (or is speaking like) a Hegelian.

  4. This reminds me of the scene in Kingsley Amis's Lucky Jim in which the pompous Professor Welch, head of the history department, answers the telephone with 'History speaking.'

  5. It's rather akin to the nonsensical statement that such-and-such 'has changed the course of history', when they really mean 'shaped'.

  6. History is watching? Perhaps it means that saints are watching us from heaven to see what choices we make.

  7. History? Surely not. It is in fact The Skibbereen Eagle that is watching, even yet!
