Arthur Roche and Pope Francis at loggerheads

In 2015, Arthur Roche cosigned a Decretum in English and Latin. It promulgated a big glossy book called Divine Worship: the Missal. (DWM in what follows; the other signatory was Cardinal Sarah.)

This was the "Ordinariate Missal", of course.

Latinists with time to spare might spend a few amused minutes comparing the English and the Latin versions of this Decree. Schoolmasters, practising and retired, may find their fingers twitching for a Marking Pencil with which to strike through the schoolboy howlers. But this post today is not yet another part of my boring series How clever I am to be able to spot the elementary grammatical errors in Vatican 'Latin'.

Arthur's 2015 Decree asserted that his Dicastery knew that "authentic Catholic worship in Spirit and truth had always found expression in diverse forms" (verum cultum catholicum in Spiritu et veritate multimodis semper elocutum esse).

Arthur's admirable 2015 Decree also called the DWM "a legitimate adaptation of the Roman Rite".

But ... er ... um ... PF has recently (2021) declared that there is only an "unicus usus" of the Roman Rite ... and that this "single use" is to be deemed to be the tired and tatty, half-a-century-old, cobweb-festooned product of Hannibal and his committees ...  the poor seedy Usus Deterior of the Roman Rite.

Bit of a contradiction here, eh?

In the left corner, wearing the red shorts, Arturo. In the right corner, wearing the blue shorts, Francesco. Which of them will land the knock-out blow?

Multimodis is just what the doctor ordered, as far as Arturo is concerned. But for Francesco, Diversity is Rigid and Divisive and needs to be extirpated. Bang bang bang. Gotcha! Why won't you lie down and just die quickly?

The Ordinariate Missal, of course, contains the Preparation at the foot of the Altar from the Tridentine Rite; its pre-Conciliar Offertory Prayers; and its Last Gospel.

Very broad-minded. Jolly jolly jolly good! Ecumenical!! Inclusive!!!

Why is it so super duper for the ex-Anglicans in the Ordinariates to enjoy these goodies in the DWM ... while Mainstream Catholic Clergy are to be given a thorough whipping if they want such things? Bend over again for another six ... especially on the First Sunday of the Month ... Cupich Day ...

There must be a moral here somewhere  ...

  1. Indeed an apparent contradiction. But to draw attention to the anomaly? As Sgt Wilson might ask, "Is that wise?"

  2. Very happy to learn of this small morsel of papal indulgence: https://www.fssp.org/en/official-communique-of-the-priestly-fraternity-of-st-peter/?fbclid=IwAR231zR5EBLO0-l292ZWqP807FF-Q4nLEh17BAjxT0QjT6AdhZr2c2DPFDM.

  3. Here is the English text of the Papa Decree

The Holy Father Francis, grants to each and every member of the Society of Apostolic Life “Fraternity of Saint Peter”, founded on July 18, 1988 and declared of “Pontifical Right” by the Holy See, the faculty to celebrate the sacrifice of the Mass, and to carry out the sacraments and other sacred rites, as well as to fulfill the Divine Office, according to the typical editions of the liturgical books, namely the Missal, the Ritual, the Pontifical and the Roman Breviary, in force in the year 1962.

They may use this faculty in their own churches or oratories; otherwise it may only be used with the consent of the Ordinary of the place, except for the celebration of private Masses.

Without prejudice to what has been said above, the Holy Father suggests that, as far as possible, the provisions of the motu proprio Traditionis Custodes be taken into account as well.

  4. One wonders when Rome will suppress the Zaire Rite as contrary to the unique use of the church?

  5. Dear Father. My friend, Herman NuDix of Continuity College in Rome, assures me this is just the latest example of liturgical continuity because the decider is The Pope just like Pius V was a Pope when he decided things.

One has to look at these things with a fresh understanding of the change inherent in continuity.

Let me give an example of how to think about these things.

Today in America is President's Day and the quintessential POTUS was Teddy Roosevelt who went on a conservation safari to Africa with his son, Kermit, and while there they killed over 500 animals. If that ain't conservation nothing is.

The definitions of continuity and conserve are so elastic they could have covered the Hinderburg Blimp.

It's all good as the kids say.

  6. Re: communiqué of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter – FSSP
A novena was prayed in all FSSP churches from 2 Feb till 11 Feb to the Holy Mother of God, begging her to move Bergoglio to recognise the exception of the FSSP to his illegitimate motu proprio ''Traditiones custodes''. The Blessed Mother did a wonder, as you see! However, i find it unfitting that in the photo the Rector of the Seminary is smiling. For Bergoglio is a cunning snake who was forced to recognise the particular law proper to the Fraternity, granted by JPII before Benedict XVI's Motu proprio. In order to attack it, Bergoglio would have to issue another decree directed specifially at the FSSP. But he could still direct all bishops to kick the FSSP out of their dioceses; and the prohibition to erect any new Authentic-Roman-Rite parishes or communities is still Bergoglio's law for all the dioceses of the world. So, if Bergoglio lives long enough, the FSSP could end up celebrating the Mass and Sacraments only for themselves. No reason to smile. And Bergoglio is certainly going to turn this unforeseen unluck for him into a means to keep the FSSP quiet about the further destruction of the Authentic Roman Rite and the further persecution of the faithful attached to that Rite. There is no good which Bergoglio cannot draw evil from.... And yet, at least the Authentic Roman Rite shall live on in the FSSP, and after Bergoglio has passed away, the Old Rite can begin to live and blossom anew. The SSSP hereby hope to win time. I hope that it works.

  7. According to the blog musings of an old curmudgeon, a Vatican investigation is to be lauched into the Ordinariate liturgy. I don't know the details

  8. Maybe Vatican has realised by now that with their harshness they are just driving FSSP in the arms of the Lefebrists!?! Divide et impera...

  9. According to one of the FSSP priests who met with the Pope, he said that TC does not apply to the former ED institutes.

“The Pope pointed out to us that in the motu proprio, where it speaks of the ex-Ecclesia Dei institutes, it indicates that they will henceforth be under the jurisdiction of a new dicastery, that for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life, and that it was by design that we were not mentioned directly in this document, since we were going to be under a new jurisdiction. "You are not affected by these restrictions," he told us, "but you retain your proper right, granted at your foundation in 1988

So it’s possible that the dicastery may issue clarifications for the other institutes, such as:

“They may use this faculty in their own churches or oratories; otherwise it may only be used with the consent of the Ordinary of the place, except for the celebration of private Masses.”

I suppose that any clarification for the Ordinariates would be issued by the CDF
