S Mary Magdalen (1)

As we approach the commemoration of S Mary Magdalen ... The Novus Ordo has followed the Church of England in promoting her to a Festum ... I have revised and now repeat, with parts of the original threads, my views about the Preface authorised in the Novus Ordo. Here is its text, warts and all; my comments will follow tomorrow:

"Qui [id est, Christus] in hortu manifestus apparuit Mariae Magdalenae, quippe quae eum dilexerat viventem, in cruce viderat morientem, quaesierat in sepulcro iacentem, ac prima adoraverat a mortuis resurgentem, et eam apostolatus officio coram apostolis honoravit, ut bonum novae vitae nuntium ad mundi fines perveniret."

  1. Several common nouns ending -rtus are 4th declension – artus, ortus, partus, portus – which may have confused the writer. Specifically, perhaps it could have been a recollection of the text A solis ortu usque ad occasum. Just to reinforce his confusion, there's also the (unrelated) 4th-decl. hortatus.

  2. It seems that there is a problem with "bonum nuntium ... perveniret". The verb "pervenire" would require a nominative which is "bonus nuntius". If an accusative object is meant then another verb would be required.

  3. We used to laugh at the "Caecilius est in horto" books, but it appears they may have a use after all!

  4. Quaesierat should be quaesi-v-erat.

  5. I am sure this text is drawn from the Marryrologium Romanum, but am away from my books and cannot report precisely what it says there; I believe it is the same in the old and new martyrologies, except that the newer does not assert that she died in Marseilles.
