links?

I wonder if anybody knows of computer links to Old Rite, pre-Bugnini Chrism Masses this year?

I don't do Facebook and all the other smart things; I can just about slowly google my way to places on my aged computer.

How about the Archbishop of Vaduz? What about their Excellencies the Bishops of the SSPX?

I'm not keen to look in on Sedevacantists.

Or ... perhaps ... nobody will be doing Chrism Masses this year. In which case: how about videos of (completely unreformed) Chrism Masses in previous years?

  1. There was one article in http://modernmedievalism.blogspot.com/. Don’t remember the link.

  2. churchservices.tv is accessible on a PC and with an HDMI cable you can even get it to display on your TV if you want a bigger display. There are literally dozens of services each day and some of them are EF. Indeed it is noticeable that it is the more traditional churches like the Bournemouth Oratory are amongst the providers. We first watched Portsmouth Cathedral but have now become Walsingham addicts - the only problem is choosing from their schedule which seems to have something on throughout the day.

  3. I couldn't find videos, but there's an enormous collection of gorgeous photos of the Chrism Mass in various cathedrals of Spain and Latin America, including the cathedral of Vaduz, and ending up with black-and-white photos of the Chrism Mass in Guatemala in 1962 and Mexico in 1966.

Scroll down and keep on scrolling through the photos, and at entry #21 you'll see

    PONTIFICALE ROMANUM
JUSSU EDITUM A BENEDICTO XIV ET LEONE XIII RECOGNITUM ET CASTIGATUM
DE OFFICIO IN QUINTA FERIA COENAE DOMINI, CUM BENEDICITUR OLEUM CATECHUMENORUM ET INFIRMORUM, ET CONFICITUR CHRISMA.

which gives "el antiguo texto de la ceremonia aquí que en la biblioteca".

  4. The following links are to various regularly scheduled live streamed EF Masses. All are likely to have what you want.

Santissima Trinità dei Pellegrini (FSSP), Rome – via their YouTube channel:

Here are two more links to live streamed EF Masses. These churches may or may not have Chrisms Masses:

  5. Thanks to all who have made suggestions. Other readers will, I am sure, find them interesting.

Sadly, however, I don't think anybody has found me an even semi-traddy Chrism Mass. Surely, there is little point in my looking at all the FSSP sites because the FSSP, outrageously, still has not been given a Bishop, despite the original undertaking that they would be given the 'deal' which Archbishop Lefebvre turned down.

  6. The Archbishop of Vaduz will be celebrating the Chrism Mass on Holy Thursday 09.04.2020, 9.00 am local time, but there's no indication that it will be live-streamed.

A good many websites will be live-streaming the Chrism Mass, but the only ones I could find are all in the NO.

  7. The Institute of Christ the King is your best bet or try Ss Trinita dei Pellegrini in Rome - they do all the pre 1955 Holy Week rites, in other words, properly!

  8. on youtube, Holy Week 2019 at Gricigliano is well worth a look at

  9. The Chrism Masses are delayed by the recent decree to after Easter sometime.

  10. Thanks to everybody.

As I wrote above, I have great respect for the FSSP, but, since they don't have a bishop, I doubt whether even H Trinity in Rome will be having a Chrism Mass, or did in previous years.I would be very glad to be wrong!

  11. Whilst I expect the answer will be the same is not the wording of the question flawed?

Surely 'pre-Bugnini Chrism Masses' per se did not exist. Prior to 1956 in Cathedral churches Pontifical Mass with the Consecration of the Oils were celebrated on Maundy Thursday. The modern 'Chrism Mass' is a product of the new Ordo Hebdomadae Sanctae Instauratus. The texts of the former rite in the Pontificale were taken and to them added an introit, pericopes etc along with part of the old preface for the consecration of the oils cut and pasted to make a preface for the Mass. I have yet to see any evidence that the introit etc had any historical basis. The OHSI created two Masses in Cathedral churches instead of a single one at which the oils were consecrated.

The celebration referred to in the post at Vaduz was following the 1956 order as would be celebrations by groups such as the SSPX.

  12. Update II of the Decree In Time of COVID-19, dated 25 March, states:

"2 – The Chrism Mass. Evaluating the concrete situation in different countries, the Episcopal Conferences will be able to give indications about a possible transfer to another date."

On 20 March, our bishop issued a pastoral letter stating that "the Chrism Mass will occur on Tuesday, April 7th, at 6:00 PM, without the faithful present. The Catholic Courier will stream this Mass." So far, there's been no change of plan.

  13. Father, your best chance may be sgg.org, though it is sede. They do all the pre-55 holy week and at the traditional times of day, and with a Bishop. I do not know whether they have done Chrism in the past.

  15. Besides the Archbishop of Vaduz, there's one other bishop who celebrates the Chrism Mass according to the 1961-1962 liturgical books of the Roman Rite: Bp. Fernando Rifan, Apostolic Administrator of the A.A. Saint John Mary Vianney, in Campos dos Goytacazes, RJ, Brazil (+ Dom Fernando Arêas Rifan, Bispo da Administração Apostólica Pessoal São João Maria Vianney).

They do not have the resources to live-stream their Masses, but this is a name to remember.

  16. Prior to 1955, Holy Oils were blessed at Solemn Pontifical Mass on Maundy Thursday, the Oleum Infimorum before Per quem haec omnia at the end of the Roman Canon, and the Sanctum Chrisma and Oleum Catechumenorum after the distribution of Holy Communion, at 1:41 and 2:22 in the video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rpV16y14bJg.
