A translation of a card I once found tucked into a breviary previously owned by the late Fr Melrose of S Giles, Reading:
PRAYER to beg of God the glorification of Pius IX and to obtain graces.
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, hear our prayer and glorify thy servant Pius IX who consecrated the Universal Church to thee.
(3 Gloria).
O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee, hear our prayer and glorify thy servant Pius IX who declared thee Immaculate.
(3 Ave).
Saint Joseph, most pure Spouse of Mary the Virgin, hear our prayer and glorify thy servant Pius IX who declared thee Patron of the Universal Church.
(3 Pater).
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Mary, Immaculate and our Hope, Saint Joseph, hear our prayer and glorify your servant Pius IX, granting us by his merits and intercession the grace which we ardently desire.
Reading now Messori’s book on Edgardo Mortara. Pio Nono should be canonized. Be a great first move for the next Pope.
ReplyDeleteI too have a similar card. It is a bi-fold with a picture of the Beatus on the front under which is a tiny, six-pointed star hole containing a square cut piece of white fabric ( I'm hoping it is a second-class relic, but most likely a third. ) Inside the fold is the prayer in English - only without the "Thees", using "yous" instead, unfortunately. At the bottom of this page in a small red disk baking the relic. Around the edge of the disk are the words, "POSTUL CAO an illegible word and PII IX". This covers the contact English translation of the information for the Postulator. The other page has the same prayer in Italian; at the bottom, the Postulator information is legible. On the back is a picture of our Lady Immaculate. I found this treasure in a box of "holy cards" in the back of a church. What a treasure! Kenneth
ReplyDeleteIt is a second class relic, either from his clothing or the wrapping clothes used at the canonical recognition (exhumation in 1956). Usually, third class relics are only created/distributed after the beatification or canonization, when the holy person’s prayer cards and touch- relics are in greater demand.
DeleteI know this because I am a priest and credentialed in the Vatican’s course for postulators. I have also been a vice postulator for a Blessed.
O Mary, Mother of mercy and Refuge of sinners, we beseech thee, be pleased to look with pitiful eyes upon poor heretics and schismatics. Thou who art the Seat of Wisdom, enlighten the minds that are miserably enfolded in the darkness of ignorance and sin, that they may clearly know that the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Roman Church is the one true Church of Jesus Christ, outside of which neither holiness nor salvation can be found. Finish the work of their conversion by obtaining for them the grace to accept all the truths of our Holy Faith, and to submit themselves to the supreme Roman Pontiff, the Vicar of Jesus Christ on earth; that so, being united with us in the sweet chains of divine charity, there may soon be only one fold under the same one shepherd; and may we all, O glorious Virgin, sing forever with exultation: Rejoice, O Virgin Mary, thou only hast destroyed all heresies in the whole world. Amen.
ReplyDeleteHail Mary, three times. An Indulgence of 500 days (S.C. Prop. of the Faith., Dec. 30, 1868;S.P. Ap., March 18, 1936. Raccolta No. 579).

One understands why this prayer, approved by Pope Pius IX. was iced in the new improved Raccolta
