I don't very often recommend other blogs ... except, of course those of Frs Finigan and Blake, Fr Zed and Rorate ... but it occurs to me that some of you may not know the blog you can find by googling IGNATIUS HIS CONCLAVE BLOG. It is written by one GKIRKUK. The author is obviously (as you will have guessed from such a name) a Slavic-born former priest of the C of E who now belongs to the Ordinariate; he made his name and fame, firstly by running a vibrant Inner-City London parish; secondly by being the best chef de cuisine in the Anglican Communion; thirdly by writing a beautiful satiric column for a magazine called New Directions which we all used to enjoy when we were still in (what Wilfrid Ward called) Old Mother Damnable. We miss it now. They were happy, happy, days; ND was edited by a clever and laughter-loving clergywife called Sara Lowe (also now, together with her husband, in Full Communion), and ... well, you can tell how totally jolly it was from the fact that the Anglican hierarchy used to criticise it for its Tone. One of the few things in life you can be absolutely sure about is that, if Management tells you it doesn't like your Tone, you are getting something right.
You need to know that the Justin who writes such revealing letters to Dear Frank is the Most Reverend the Father in God the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, Metropolitan and Primate of All England, alterius orbis papa; and Frank is the Successor Petri. I nunc et lege.
Father,
ReplyDeleteOne suggestion for your friend, your highly praised fellow blogger, on Ignatius his Conclave. Please tell him that the lack of contrast between the depth of colour of the typeface and the background make his blog exceedingly difficult to read. Yours by contrast has good contrast (just typographically) and is therefore easier to read intelligently.
Thank you - I had not discovered the Kirkosphere. Hope he might interview Mgr Armitage Shanks (of the Ordinariate of the Southern Cross) sometime, to tell us about his relocation to the Antipodes once he had secured his Archidiaconal pension.
ReplyDeleteWould this be the same GKIRKUK who now writes in The Portal? www.portalmag.co.uk
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteI am reminded of two blogs, "Eccles etc is saved" , and the "Beaker folk of Husborne Crawley", which I suppose just means puckish wit emanating from a somewhat orthodox , very English (and / or Anglicanish ) standpoint.
Not fair to make it seem derivative, just that I'd seen the others first.
The way the world is going, I fear it 'll soon be a case of there's "none left but me and three others, and when I'm dead that's the lot gone." Somehow somewhere the church will prevail, but England , and Catholic England could do with looking as if they had a bit more of a run in this world.
Hoping only in the eternal, gather we rosebuds/chuckles while we may.
@job, perhaps your browser is at fault. Ignatiushisconclave.org is perfectly clear on Firefox, strong black on pure white.
ReplyDeleteDear Father,
ReplyDeleteBesides daily imbibing Frs. Blake, Finigan, Zed, and your good self, I confess to checking up on Eccles and the EOTT. Is it a sin, or only an imperfection, to spend time on such frivolities, albeit they have more than a grain of truth hidden in their ironies and parodies? Now you have exposed me to ignatiushisconclave.org, which contains not only today's post but a wealth of back items. Is there a permissible limit for these delights? I am thinking of something along the lines of the Thomist manualist Prummer's rule for alcoholic beverages: Hinc bibere usque ad hilaritatem per se quidem non est illicitum. I have it on good authority (not to drop a name, but the current Theologian of the Papal Household) that "hilaritatem" is to be translated "cheerfulness." He was sipping a Scotch at the time.
Your guidance on all matters, including reading blogs, relishing the perfect put-down, and translating "hilaritatem," will be most welcome.
I notice that with great care you distinguish between Frs Finigan and Blake and Fr Zuhlsdorf and Rorate Caeli, father.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the reference to Ignatius, a blog which was previously unknown to me although I "lurk" regularly on the other four. I have spent a pleasant time exploring it. As to the criticism of his tone, I am reminded of a remark of the excellent Dorothy L Sayers: "X may be a perverse old idiot, but it's more dignified not to say so in so many words. A bland and deadly courtesy is more devastating, don't you think?" (Gaudy Night)
ReplyDeleteHonestly, is one allowed to satirize Jesuits? I am however, over the moon (let the reader understand), in reading the blog...
ReplyDeleteThanks to our host's wise prompting I have just found Fr Kirk's post for 12th May 2015, 'Bugnini's Big Blunder', which should not be missed by devotees of this blog.
