Back to Bishops

Fr Ray Blake has a good short post on Episcopacy in East and West ('Bishop Bashing') which could suitably act as an endnote to my recent series on Episcopacy.

Am I right in thinking that Bishop Richard Williamson's latest Dinoscopus - particularly his last couple of sentences - suggests that he envisages a continuing 'pure' SSPX if Mgr Fellay does a deal with the Vatican?

God bless their scarlet cotton socks, the lot of them.

I'd be amazed if you weren't. Isn't that what always happens with schisms?

Bishop Williamson's comments on liberal traditionalism (a species I have yet to see manifested) were very interesting. The SSPX has suffered splits in the past, most obviously to the FSSP, and another one is inevitable should they ever reconcile. By the by didn't Bishop Fellay ban Bishop Williamson from writing or speaking publicly? Did he lift that or is Bishop Wiliamson just ignoring it?

For the most part I agree with RW's conclusions (how he arrives at them is another matter).

The political/secular context would have to change radically for his once mainstream views to become aired once more by the majority or at least a sizeable minority.

The American Tea Party movement is the first feint rumblings (no more than that) that such a change could take place. Given that the movement has already been infiltrated by neo-cons, it seems unlikely that they will be the ones to initiate the revolution in thinking that RW demands.

I suspect it will take further economic unrest for such a revolution to be unleashed and where that leaves post-conciliar "Club Catholicism" is anyone's guess.

Perhaps Sadie would like to produce some evidence of the Tea Party's thinking resembling that of Bp Williamson? The TP is a small-state libertarian movement, and even the neocons by which it has allegedly been infiltrated are hardly likely to have much truck with Holocaust denial and the like.

The neo-cons are pro-Israel whilst the "paulites" amongst the TP want an end to Orwellian-style endless wars. Amongst the latter group there will a number extremely hostile to what they see as the takeover of their country by a foreign power.

If you can't join up the dots from that then dialogue is futile
