In a few weeks I plan a flying visit, so to speak, to North America; I who who have never hitherto set foot outside what that Donald von Rumsfeldt referred to as Old Europe.
Do I need a visa? Do I have to jump through any hoops apart from having a passport and a ticket?

The U.S. State Department has a Visa Waiver program that certain countries (including the UK) participate in. The full details are at:

My Dear Father, May I suggest you wear long haul flight socks so as to avoid Thrombosis of the leg. My Uncle an anaesthetist always advised to do so and we can not afford to loose you as you are so much a part of our on-line lives! Bon Voyage et bon retour!
I like the way you have a comma after Sussex in your profile. Too many people fail to conclude an address with a comma.
You also have to apply on-line through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization ESTA.
Less hoops upon arrival, Father - but expect them upon departure.
Following the ‘Shoe-bomber’ incident some years ago, people now have to remove their shoes going through Security at departure. Given that the latest attempt (Detroit on Christmas Day) involved exploding nether garments, one may well ask if that might be next? We always seem to be defending against the last threat, rather than anticipating the next one!
Depending on where in the US you are going, the weather you’ve been having over there might serve as a good preparation. I shoveled 12” of global warming in the past couple of days here in the Midwest!
When you apply for your ESTA (See motopropio's comment} make sure you apply through a legitimate site. I didn't and have had all sorts of problems including having to change a credit card. Beware of fraudulent sites which appear to be genuine.
What part or parts of our land do you plan to visit, Father?
